Car insurance for young drivers seems to be increasing in price every day, and claims for young drivers are also on the increase.

The statistics aren’t too favourable either. A recent survey showed that 17 and 18 year old motorists are twice as likely to have a road accident as someone in their 30s, three times as likely as someone in their 40s.

This all adds up to increased cost of car insurance for young drivers, but that’s not all. Being a young driver also means that no-claims discounts haven’t been built up, further adding to the cost of car insurance.

2010 saw the biggest annual jump in insurance premiums ever recorded, and young drivers have been hit hardest.

In 2010, the average cost of an accident for drivers overall was around £1,700. For young drivers aged 17 or 18, this cost almost doubled to £3,500.

Sadly this has meant that drivers aged between 17 and 22 have seen a 51% increase in the average cost of insurance in the last 12 months.

Men of this age are likely to pay around £2,500 for their cover, and women £1,400. Some young drivers in this age category can pay as much as £4,000 a year for insurance cover.

Ways to reduce your car insurance premium

But don’t let that put you off, there are plenty of ways to get cheaper car insurance for young drivers.

Choose a vehicle with a smaller engine size

One way to save money when looking for car insurance for young drivers is to pick a car with a small engine size. The smaller the engine, the cheaper the insurance, meaning you can get out on the road for less!

Making modifications

Another way to save money when shopping for car insurance for young drivers is to think carefully about any modifications the car currently has or that you plan to carry out. Car modifications can include anything from alloy wheels that don’t come as standard, tuning procedures such as lowering the suspension of the vehicle for increased performance, fitting body kits to the car, or fitting a high-performance exhaust system.

Even upgrading an In Car Entertainment (ICE) system can affect the cost of car insurance for young drivers.

Keep your car safe

Keeping your car safe is another easy way to keep car insurance low for young drivers. For example, if your car is safely kept in a garage overnight, insurance premiums can be reduced. Having a good quality alarm system or immobiliser fitted to your vehicle is another good way to save money on car insurance for young drivers.

Drive safely and watch your speed

One very important way to get cheap car insurance for young drivers is to drive safely and avoid speeding at all times, as getting points on your licence will mean increased car insurance premiums.
